Olympic swimmer Adam Ramsay-Peaty has said that he will only forgive his family when they become better people.

His family feud became public in November after tensions flared over his wedding to Holly Ramsay, the daughter of TV chef Gordon Ramsay. He has now incorporated Ramsay into his surname.

He says he wants his estranged family to ā€œimprove as peopleā€ before he forgives them and resumes contact with his parents.

Ramsay-Peaty, who in July secured a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke, bronze in the 100m breaststroke and silver as part of England’s mixed 4x100m medley relay team in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, had banned his mother from attending his wedding ceremony after a row over his wife-to-be’s hen party.

His aunt Louise Williams described the decision not to invite his mother, Caroline, to the hen party at Soho Farmhouse in Chipping Norton, Oxon, as ā€œdivisive and hurtfulā€.

The three-time Olympic champion, 31, who was raised Catholic, started attending an evangelical church in 2023 and has since spoken of his faith, describing himself as ā€œa very religious manā€.

ā€œFor me, as a Christian, there has to be forgiveness,ā€ he told The Guardian. ā€œIt doesn’t mean you have to forget, but forgiveness takes time. I’m not saying that it won’t get better, but it has to come from a place where I feel like they’ve improved as people, in a sense, and opened that communication up.ā€

Mrs Peaty, 60, a former nursery manager, told the Daily Mail that she worried her son had been pulled away by the Ramsay family and was ā€œin Gordon’s clutchesā€.

ā€œI can’t help but feel like they are pulling him away from me. Their family is very insular,ā€ she added.

Last week, Mrs Peaty raised hopes of a reunion when she posted on Instagram: ā€œWe continue to support Adam from afar. He’s our son whom we love, whom we supported to reach his aspirations. Our love, our time, our sacrifices were given freely with no expectation of financial reward.ā€

The Ramsay and Peaty families first met through Tilly Ramsay, Mrs Ramsay-Peaty’s sister, after the television presenter, cook and social media influencer appeared with the Olympian on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021.

The newly married couple are expecting a daughter in December and the Olympian already has a five-year-old son, George, from a former relationship.

He said his ā€œthick skinā€ had protected him from the scrutiny that the feud had fuelled on social media and in the press.

But he admitted he was concerned about the impact of the highly publicised family conflict on his wife and future child.

He said: ā€œI care about my wife, I care about my son. I care about the relationships that people think I have, but that’s my private life.ā€
