Recurring costars Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott have found love offscreen, and coming soon: a baby in fall 2026.
The couple are expecting their first child, “a beautiful surprise after an emotional year,” a source told PEOPLE. “They feel very blessed.”
Plaza and Abbott, best known as Marnie’s boyfriend Charlie on *Girls*, first shared the screen in the 2020 psychological drama *Black Bear* opposite Sarah Gadon.

The twisted tale of a love triangle is told in two parts, each with the same characters, however, with the roles swapped. In the first, Abbott’s Gabe cheats on his wife Blair (Gadon) with Plaza’s Allison; in the second, he has an affair with Blair, driving Allison into the arms of a killer black bear.

Filming in chronological order in the summer of 2019, Plaza and Abbott didn’t have much time together before cameras rolled, she told **.
“I don’t think Chris and I even really talked or really met or got to know each other at all until a day or something before we started shooting,” she said during a virtual Q&A with Abbott and writer-director Lawrence Michael Levine.
The *Parks and Recreation* actress wasn’t accustomed to such spontaneity, she admitted. “I think a lot of times it actually does benefit you to rehearse or to spend more time with someone that you’re supposed to have a really deep connection with on camera. Because it’s hard to, I don’t know, for me anyways. But I also think movies have their own kind of karma. And they have their own energy.”
“I kind of agree,” said Abbott. “The way it worked out kind of felt right.”
The second part was mostly filmed overnight, so the costars would drive back to their hotel as the sun was rising. Compounding their sleep deprivation, the remote area of the Adirondack Mountains lacked food options and WiFi, making them go a little stir-crazy.
“I remember I wandered out of the hotel and just bought socks for no reason,” Abbott recalled as Plaza laughed. “I borrowed money to buy socks from Aubrey.”

Three years later, the two actors reunited for an even messier love story, the down-and-out souls of *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*. The two-person play, which debuted in 1983, ran for three months at New York’s Lucille Lortel Theatre.
It was Plaza’s first time in a theatrical production, but as *The New York Times* reported in a September 2023 joint interview, “the only person” she could imagine taking that leap with was Abbott, who began his acting career Off-Broadway two decades earlier.
And she was the only person he could imagine in the role of Roberta, a troubled divorcee, opposite the self-loathing Danny. What was it about Roberta that reminded him of Plaza — who had married writer-director Jeff Baena two years earlier — the *NYT* asked Abbott. Before he could answer, Plaza suggested, “sexy… beautiful … broken?”
Abbot said it was actually her “nervous bright eyes.”
As they prepared to act out the highs and lows of Danny and Roberta’s passion every night for three months straight, “I think you also have to do it for each other,” Abbott told the *NYT*. “We want to entertain the audience, but I personally want to entertain Aubrey.”
“I guess I like to entertain him as well,” added Plaza.
The final curtain fell on *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* in January 2024. Eight months later, Plaza quietly separated from Baena, whom she had been with since 2011. He reportedly struggled with the split and had been seeking therapy, but was still in communication with Plaza.
On Jan. 3, 2025, she received a concerning text message from Baena, who was found dead later that day in his Los Angeles home.

In August 2025, Plaza gave fans an update on how she was dealing with the loss on Amy Poheler’s *Good Hang* podcast.
“Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning,” she said. “I feel grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay.”
