The actress shares how the on-screen dynamic between Harrison Ford and Jason Segel's characters is influenced by their real-life friendship

Cobie Smulders is opening up to PEOPLE about her time working on Shrinking season 3.
The actress, 43, reprised her role on the Apple TV+ series as Sofi, the potential love interest of Jason Segel’s Jimmy. While their relationship hit a rocky point, the finale brought the two together — with help from Jimmy’s mentor, Paul (Harrison Ford).
In the final few minutes of the April 8 episode, Paul surprises Jimmy for a “goodbye” lunch and flies out to California after moving in with his daughter in Connecticut. During their reconciliation, Paul reveals he, like Jimmy, meddled in his friend’s life and invited Sofi to lunch with Jimmy. The episode closes out with the two reconnecting.
Smulders spoke with PEOPLE ahead of the finale and remarked on sharing the final scene with Ford.
"I mean, Harrison is one of the greats, right? So it was a really beautiful moment for me, just selfishly, to be able to be in a scene with him is like just a really exciting moment of my life," the actress says. “We had a great time, and it was fun to be funny and silly and try to make people laugh.”
“I feel like his character has been such a mentor to Jason’s [character],” she continues. “There are so many different layers of that relationship. But I think that when you know when Paul speaks, people really listen.”

The How I Met Your Mother alum notes how the character mirrors the impact of Ford’s prolific career. “He is similar to Harrison Ford in life; he has this wealth of experience to communicate. So when Paul speaks to Jimmy, he really listens.”
Smulders also remarked on working with the entire Shrinking ensemble — Alice (Lukita Maxwell), and their friends Brian (Michael Urie), Liz (Christa Miller), Gabby (Jessica Williams) and Sean (Luke Tennie.)
"I felt very honored. I felt very grateful to join this cast,” she says. "It's such a talented group of people."

The Avengers actress previously noted how she was “really excited” to reunite with longtime friend, Segel, 46. The pair previously starred on How I Met Your Mother together. Smulders played Robin Scherbatsky and Segel was Marshall Eriksen, alongside Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby), Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin) and Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson).
She told PEOPLE how she still feels “the same closeness to Jason,” so returning on set with him, everything “just sort of clicked in.”
