Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have been behind some of Hollywood’s most memorable modern films—from Barbie and Little Women to Marriage Story and Frances Ha. But beyond their creative partnership, the filmmakers are also partners off screen, sharing a script-worthy love story that unfolded after they met on set in 2010.
Ahead, a look back at Gerwig and Baumbach’s complete timeline, from their professional relationship to their real-life romance and low-key family life.
They make their first film together.2010
Gerwig and Baumbach first cross paths on the set of Baumbach’s 2010 film Greenberg, in which Gerwig stars opposite Ben Stiller. At the time, Baumbach co-writes and produces the project with his then-wife, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, with whom he welcomed his first son that same year.

Five months after the film’s release, Baumbach and Leigh separate following five years of marriage. (His 2019 film Marriage Story is widely believed to have drawn from that period of his life.)
According to a feature in The New Yorker, however, Gerwig and Baumbach’s romantic relationship doesn’t begin until after his separation, and following the release of Greenberg.

Gerwig and Baumbach next co-write the 2012 film Frances Ha, which Baumbach directs and Gerwig stars in as the titular character. It is believed that their romance begins while working on the film, as upon its debut, a Los Angeles Times article refers to them as a “real-life couple.”

The couple teams up for their third movie collaboration, Mistress America, which premiers in 2015. For this project, Gerwig co-writes, co-produces, and stars in the film, while Baumbach serves as director, co-producer, and co-writer.
In an interview with Collider, Baumbach discusses the creative process of working with Gerwig, saying, “We really share a lot of the same sensibilities, we like a lot of the same movies. In writing, behavioral building blocks are interesting to both of us, so when we start talking about doing something together, there’s a lot of common ground, even though we’re bringing in our own perspectives and our own lives to it, but it feels very easy.”
Greta says she's not Noah's muse.October 2017
In an interview with Vulture promoting her directorial debut, Lady Bird, Gerwig responds to critics who refer to her as Baumbach’s “muse,” a title she takes issue with. “I did not love being called a muse. I didn’t want to be strident about it or say, ‘Hey, give me my due,’ but I did feel like I wasn’t a bystander,” she told the outlet, pointing out that she co-wrote the second and third films they made together.

She forgets to thank Baumbach in her acceptance speech, which she shares later on The View, saying, “I had an entire speech that I was going to give, and I got up there... I looked at Oprah, and I was like, ‘It’s gone.’ But I had a whole thing about him. He’s my favorite writer and my favorite first reader.”

Wrapping up awards season, Gerwig and Baumbach make their Oscars red-carpet debut. Gerwig glows in a beaded yellow Rodarte gown, while Baumbach stays classic in a black tux.
They welcome their first child.March 2019
Gerwig manages to keep her pregnancy a secret while directing Little Women, but in March 2019, Page Six confirms she and Baumbach have welcomed their first child together.
Later in the year, Gerwig publicly announces the birth of their baby—now six months old—on the cover of Vogue. The director reveals she went into labor 24 hours after wrapping the filming of Little Women, and that the couple welcomed a son named Harold Ralph Gerwig Baumbach.
Gerwig reflects on balancing her directorial work with motherhood in the piece. And Baumbach, who joins in for part of the interview, reflects on the huge year they each had professionally (Baumbach's Marriage Story debuted in August and Gerwig’s Little Women debuted on Christmas), sharing how the new parents balance their creative work.
“I think the pleasure of writing for us is that it seeps into everything. I’d show her a cut of my movie, and then a few months later, I’m watching her movie,” Baumbach says. “I don’t want to sound sickeningly happy, but it’s a truly great thing to watch someone you love make something and love the thing they make. I don’t know how else to say it without saying great a lot.”
They have a huge Oscars year.2020
Gerwig and Baumbach prove their status as cinema’s ultimate power couple during the 2020 awards season. Following Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Gerwig’s Little Women, the two garner six Oscar nominations each. They become the first couple in Academy Award history to be nominated and competing in the same categories, though ultimately, neither takes home an Oscar.

During a January 2020 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the couple reflects on waking up to learn about their Oscar nominations and joke about being rivals. They also share that after so many years together, they call each other “husband” and “wife,” even though they’re not yet married.
“‘Boyfriend’ makes it sound like I just met him last week,” Gerwig explains with a laugh. "‘Lover' is disgusting. And ‘fiancé’ makes it sound like there’s an imminent wedding. So none if it works.”
Greta announces her second pregnancy.December 2022
During an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Gerwig announces she is pregnant with her and Baumbach’s second child. “I am with child,” she shares, prompting cheers from the audience.
Gerwig later confirms the birth of their son in a 2023 interview with Elle U.K., revealing that the couple quietly welcomed their second baby four months earlier. Sharing a photo of the newborn, she says, “He’s a little Schmoo, I don’t know if you can tell energy from the picture, but that’s very much his energy. The little guy is sleeping through the night. But I’m still doing that thing where I wake up, every hour to 90 minutes, and just hover. You just keep wanting to look at that baby. So I’m slightly in a twilight state.”
The couple does not share the name of baby No. 2.
They collaborate on Barbie.2023
The couple co-writes the 2023 blockbuster hit Barbie—their latest film collaboration. The movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, goes on to become the year’s highest-grossing film.

When it comes time for the movie’s debut, however, Baumbach skips the world premiere of the film in support of the Hollywood Writers’ Guild strike at the time.
“My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach, is not here. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America,” Gerwig says, according to Variety.
“He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in Barbie happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers,” she continues.
The couple ties the knot!December 2023
People confirms that Gerwig and Baumbach got married after 12 years of dating. The couple ties the knot at a City Hall wedding in New York City.
Noah gushes about Greta and their kids.November 2025
In an interview with GQ to promote his latest film Jay Kelly, Baumbach makes rare comments about his life with Gerwig and their two children.
“I cry a lot now. I find a lot of life emotional in a good way," Baumbach tells the publication, crediting Gerwig and their kids for helping him become more in tune with his feelings.

“With Greta and I, we really recognize each other, even though it manifests in different ways sometimes,” he continues. “That helped me gain access to, like, ‘Actually, I am like that.’ She’s like, ‘I love da-da-da.’ And I’m like ‘I do too, why am I not saying I love it?’”
He then gushes about his wife further, reflecting on how he wouldn’t have worked on the Barbie movie if it weren’t for her. He says, “Greta has such joy and light.”
“It’s actually what I was saying to you: feeling like I had that light too and I’m not shining. I want to shine that light and she’s giving me permission to do it," he explains. And in a way, watching Barbie, and watching the pleasure of it—not that it didn’t involve difficulties and everything too—was inspiring to me.”
