Marc Maron and Sharon Stone came together for a new movie premiering at this year's Tribeca Festival and found a way to honor Maron's late girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, as they filmed a key scene.
Maron, 62, and Stone, 68, costar as former spouses and actors who both receive terminal diagnoses in their new movie In Memoriam. In an interview with Variety, Maron said that he grew frustrated with himself when he struggled to cry on command for a scene between himself and Stone, until she encouraged him to draw on his grief over Shelton, who died at 54 in 2020. (Maron and Shelton had been dating for roughly a year at the time of her death.)
"Why don't you do the scene to Lynn, and I'll make sure she's here," Stone told Maron, according to the outlet. In describing how the scene played out after Maron took Stone's advice, the actor and comedian described his Oscar-nominated costar as "kind of a mystical being."
"She's a powerful force. She said that, and it brought me to a space where I realized that Lynn was my biggest champion as an actor," Maron said. "She loved to direct me. I don't know that I would have continued pursuing acting if it weren't for her. So by doing it for Lynn, I got to that place emotionally that I think lands."

According to Variety, Stone and Maron met and formed a friendship when she appeared on his podcast WTF in 2018 and have remained close over the years. She even sent him a note expressing her condolences when Shelton died in 2020. "It was a terrible tragedy," Stone said of Shelton's death. "He lost her so early, and she was so important to him."

Shelton and Maron were friends and creative collaborators for years before their relationship turned romantic in 2019. Maron acted in the Netflix series GLOW, which Shelton directed several episodes of, and she also directed multiple episodes of his IFC sitcom Maron in 2016. Just days prior to Shelton's death, IndieWire reported that the couple were working on a movie together.

"We genuinely partnered in a very profound way on the scene. In my career, I've been put up against the big dogs. They would always bring me in to put me up against the biggest, toughest guys, and oftentimes guys who were kind of a handful, but they knew that I could take it," Stone told Variety of working with Maron. "But it was so different to work with someone like Marc, who was so open and so honest in their real feelings and emotions, and so available to be sincere with me. He was available to be my true partner, not my adversary."
In Memoriam premieres at the Tribeca Festival on June 7.
