PBS News Weekend has ended.

On Sunday, Jan. 11, the weekend news broadcast aired its final episode. Anchor John Yang explained that the network "canceled the show due to the loss of federal funding for public media."

"As you may know, this is the last broadcast of PBS News Weekend, at least for the foreseeable future," Yang, 67, who has anchored the show since 2022, said.

He added, "We’re grateful that you’ve chosen us over the years as the place to get news on Saturdays and Sundays."

On Friday, Jan. 9, co-anchors Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett announced on PBS NewsHour that the Weekend edition of the news program would be ending.

"Due to federal budget cuts, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to rework our staffing and programming, and this Sunday, our PBS News Weekend team will sign off the air," Nawaz, 46, said.

Yang joined Nawaz and Bennett, 45, on the broadcast, as Nawaz said, "John, we're going to miss you so, so much."

"Thank you does not even begin to cover it," she told him. "You and your team have done incredible storytelling and covered major breaking news every weekend."

Bennett jumped in next, telling Yang, "Weekend after weekend, you and the team brought such rigor and care and heart to the stories you covered. You will be deeply missed, and we are deeply grateful for all of your work."

Yang then gave a shoutout to the "small but mighty team" who worked on the weekend broadcast with him. "We're proud of the creativity, the dedication they brought to each and every segment," he said.

The anchor then revealed that he is exiting the network at the end of the month. "I'll be leaving PBS News at the end of the month as I step back from full-time work," Yang said.

He added, "But I'm delighted to say that many members of this team will be sticking around. They'll be producing some exciting new programming that you'll be seeing in the coming days and coming weeks."

PBS News Weekend's cancellation comes after President Donald Trump issued an executive order in May 2025 to halt federal funding for PBS and NPR.

Trump, 79, wrote in the order that both networks fail to present a "fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens" as his reasoning for the cuts.
