See 11 Celebrities Who Are Dual Citizens

Their jobs may be in Hollywood, but many celebrities hail from around the world — in fact, many A-listers are dual citizens.
Many of them are dual citizens by birth, like Nicole Kidman, who was born to an Australian family while they were living in Hawaii. Others were born outside of the United States and became naturalized as American citizens later in life when their careers had them living in the U.S. for significant portions of the year.
Politically-minded stars, like Paul Bettany and John Oliver, became U.S. citizens so they could have more of an active role in politics, and the ability to vote in elections.
“Standing in line (to vote) ... I didn’t feel it. Giving my name and getting the ballot, I didn’t feel it. Scanning it into the machine and the machine saying, ‘Your vote has been counted’ — I nearly burst into tears,” Oliver said on Late Night with Stephen Colbertin 2020 after voting in his first U.S. election. “That is the truth. My eyes got misty, and I thought, I don’t know if I can cry in a voting station.”

Nicole Kidman

Practical Magic star Nicole Kidman is an Australian actress but she was born in Hawaii, granting her both American and Australian citizenship.
When she was born, her father was studying biochemistry in Honolulu, and the family moved to Washington, D.C., shortly after, as she revealed on Live with Kelly and Mark. Kidman didn’t live in Australia full time until she was 4 years old.
Though she primarily lives in Nashville with her daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, Kidman often goes back to Australia to visit family.

Ryan Reynolds

He may have been PEOPLE’s first-ever Canadian Sexiest Man Alive, but Ryan Reynolds is a citizen of both his homeland and the U.S.
The four kids he shares with wife Blake Lively are also dual citizens.
“My kids, they have Canadian passports as well, and they feel a real connection to that,” Reynolds told Hugh Jackman in a 2024 PEOPLE interview. “It’s a point of pride of theirs. They’ve also spent huge amounts of their formative years in Canada, and particularly Vancouver.”
In 2020, Reynolds — who has been awarded Canada’s highest honor, becoming an Officer to the Order of Canada — voted in his first U.S. election.
“This is my first time voting in America,” he captioned an Instagram photo. “I’d like to thank my wife Blake for making my first time so gentle and loving. It was super scary at first, then exciting and now I’m a little tired. But proud.”

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz

Actors Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz are both Brits by birth, but became U.S. citizens during their marriage. Weisz became a naturalized citizen in 2011.
“I did it because I thought I would go back to England for a while, and lose my green card,” Weisz told Stylist in 2012. “I’m not going back now, but being a citizen means I can vote here, which is exciting; not just being an outsider. When I come back into the country now and they stamp my passport, they say, ‘Welcome home Ma’am.’ I think that’s a lovely formality. No one in England would ever say that, would they?”
Later, Craig followed in his wife’s footsteps and became a naturalized U.S. citizen.
“Everyone is an immigrant in this country,” the James Bond star said at the Knives Out premiere in 2019. “I’m an immigrant. I’m an American. We’re all immigrants.”

Paul Bettany

British-born actor Paul Bettany met his wife Jennifer Connelly when they were cast as a married couple in the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind.
They married in 2003 and have primarily lived in New York City, with Connelly’s son Kai and their two kids Agnes and Stellan.
It wasn’t until the 2016 presidential election that the Marvel star decided to become an American citizen, realizing that he wanted to be able to have a say in the politics of his adopted homeland.
“I’ve got to be part of voting [Trump] out,” he told Vanity Fairin 2017. “It’s just the republic that’s at stake.”

Naomi Watts

The Ring actress Naomi Watts was born in Britain and lived there for most of her childhood, until she moved to Australia at age 14.

It’s there that she met Kidman, with whom she’s still close friends. While she’s closely associated with Australia, Watts is a Brit at heart.
“I consider myself British and have very happy memories of the UK,” she told TheSun in 2011. “I spent the first 14 years of my life in England and Wales and never wanted to leave. When I was in Australia I went back to England a lot.”
Watts has maintained her dual British-Australian citizenship.

Cobie Smulders

How I Met Your Mother star Cobie Smulders and Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam have been a couple for over 20 years and have been married since 2012, but the Canadian Smulders didn’t become a naturalized American citizen until 2020.
To commemorate the moment, she posted a selfie on Instagram. “After many hours in a Federal building double masked, lathering myself repeatedly in hand sanitizer and acing the first test I’ve taken since High School I am a Dual Citizen of 🇨🇦/🇺🇸 ,” she wrote, adding, “(Canada you will always be my first ❤️).”
In the caption, she added more about her motivation for making the change. “I have been living in the US for 16 years now working and paying taxes, making little humans, creating a family and making this Country my home,” Smulders wrote. “But I have been unable to Vote. I am excited to do so in this coming election in November. It is an opportunity that I will not waste and am grateful to have my Vote count when so many people who are working and living in this country as long or longer than I have are not able to.”
The family still has roots in Canada, though. In May 2026, Smulders shared photos of the cabin in British Columbia that she shares with Killam and their two daughters.

Samuel L. Jackson

Though he was raised in Tennessee, legendary actor Samuel L. Jackson holds dual citizenship in the African nation of Gabon.
After learning that his ancestry hails from that country, and that he’s connected to the Benga tribe, Jackson pursued citizenship in the there in 2019.
“A lot of people tried to trace themselves and find out where they came from – all they could find out was maybe a country,” he told The Guardianin 2020. “So to go through what I went through – to find out what tribal ancestry I had and to be able to step back into – it was a really emotional, satisfying feeling. There’s a fullness that comes upon me, every time I land in Africa. As I step on the ground, everything sort of changes.”

Martin Short

Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Martin Short has lived and worked in America for decades, and now holds dual citizenship. His heart is clearly in both places: when he’s in public, he makes a point to wear the pin signifying he’s an Officer of the Order of Canada, the highest honor a citizen can achieve in the country, equivalent to knighthood in Britain.
“I’m not doing it for Americans,” Short told theToronto Starin 2025. “I’m doing it for Canadians. I was once in a restaurant years ago in Toronto, and I didn’t have my pin on. And (film director) Norman Jewison came over to the table and said, ‘You gotta wear the pin! That’s part of the rules.’ So, I do.”

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek is truly a woman of the world.
Raised in Mexico by a Lebanese father and a Spanish mother, she moved to America to pursue a Hollywood career, eventually becoming a dual citizen. In 2002, she became the first Mexican actress to receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Frida.
Now, married to French businessman François-Henri Pinault, she spends a significant part of the year in France and England with their daughter Valentina.

John Oliver

British comedian John Oliver moved to the U.S. in 2006, working first at The Daily Show and then on his own show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He became a naturalized citizen in 2019 so that he could be more involved in the politics he dissects through his comedy-news reporting.
“Look, I love this country,” he said on his show in 2024, when endorsing Kamala Harris for president. “I’m an immigrant. I chose to be here.”
Talking to Colbert in 2020, Oliver shared his feelings about becoming an American citizen. “You worry about your immigration status all the time,” he said on The Late Show. “And even getting your passport doesn’t feel real because you haven’t tested it against a system.”

Charlize Theron

Academy Award winner Charlize Theron grew up in rural South Africa. As a teenager, she spent time modeling in Europe and dancing ballet in New York before heading west to try her luck in Hollywood.
Though she’s been a fixture in Los Angeles since 1994, Theron didn’t secure her naturalized citizenship until many years later.
“Well, I’ve always wanted to be [a citizen] they just didn’t want to take me. It’s quite a process you have to work hard, you know, study up,” she told David Letterman on The Late Show in 2008. “Then finally I was approved and you have to go in and do an interview. You have to know your stuff.”
