Here’s what the star-studded cast is up to today, including Julie Andrews, Mandy Moore and Sandra Oh
Today, Anne Hathaway is a household name, but it was her first ever movie, The Princess Diaries, that launched her career when it hit theaters 25 years ago.
At the time, Hathaway was a newcomer, but she had the legendary Julie Andrews as her costar to show her the ropes, and that’s just the beginning of the movie’s impressive cast list.
Adapted from Meg Cabot’s YA book, The Princess Diaries is about unpopular high schooler Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway) who learns she is not only a princess and heir to the Genovian throne, but also expected to rule someday. With the help of her royal grandmother (Andrews), Mia transforms inside and out as she comes to embrace her new reality.
Directed by Garry Marshall, The Princess Diaries cast is populated by frequent collaborator Héctor Elizondo, as well as Mandy Moore (in her on-screen movie debut) and independent film star Heather Matarazzo. The film had a 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and in October of 2024, Hathaway confirmed that a third film was in the works.
Below, see what the film’s stars are up to today.

The Princess Diaries was Anne Hathaway’s breakthrough role as she won over audiences as Princess Mia of Genovia in the original film and the 2004 sequel.

She took home both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her role in 2012’s Les Misérables.

Long live the queen! The legendary Julie Andrews has done everything but stay under the radar since her time as Clarisse Renaldi and Mia’s paternal grandmother.

Mandy Moore as Lana Thomas

We loved to hate Mandy Moore as Lana Thomas, the archrival of Mia. Today, we love the singer-turned-actress for all her work on- and off-screen.
In addition to a leading role in 2002’s A Walk to Remember, Moore returned to her villain ways in 2004’s Saved!, which featured her Princess Diaries costar Matarazzo. She also voiced Rapunzel in Disney’s Tangled (2010) and thrilled audiences in 47 Meters Down (2017) before melting hearts as Rebecca Pearson on the NBC hit drama This Is Us, earning a Golden Globe in 2017 and an Emmy in 2019 for her performance. Since 2023, she has appeared on the Peacock series Dr. Death, and she starred in the 2026 movie The Breadwinner.
Moore has also continued her singing career, releasing her seventh album, In Real Life, in May 2022.
Following her divorce from musician Ryan Adams in 2016, Moore married singer Taylor Goldsmith in 2018. Moore and Goldsmith have two sons, August “Gus” Harrison and Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett, plus a daughter Louise, born in September of 2024.

Sandra Oh as Geraldine Gupta

Besides Hathaway, no other cast member’s career has blossomed as Sandra Oh‘s has since the release of The Princess Diaries.
Off the back of her memorable stint as Vice Principal Gupta, Oh became a household name for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy. After 10 seasons of saving lives and cracking jokes, Oh later took on the titular character Eve Polastri on Killing Eve. The show garnered critical acclaim over its four-season run, with Oh winning best actress and making history at the Golden Globes in 2019. Her performance also received several Emmy nominations, including outstanding lead actress in 2022.
Her other film credits and voice work include Sideways (2004), Rabbit Hole (2010), Tammy (2014), Over the Moon (2020), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Turning Red (2022) and Umma (2022). Since 2021, she has also voiced Debbie Grayson on Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.
Oh was married to Sideways creator Alexander Payne from 2003 to 2006.

Robert Schwartzman as Michael Moscovitz

Robert Schwartzman played Mia’s soulmate Michael in the film, though his character did not return for the sequel. In real life, he’s capturing people’s hearts in a different way: music. Schwartzman is the lead vocalist of the rock band Rooney.
While he has had a few small acting roles since The Princess Diaries, Schwartzman has also directed four films, Dreamland (2016), The Unicorn (2018), The Argument (2020) and Hung Up on a Dream (2023). And a little fun fact about Schwartzman? As the son of actress Talia Shire, he’s a brother to Moonrise Kingdom star Jason and the cousin of actor Nicolas Cage and filmmaker Sofia Coppola.

In addition, she is known for her role in 2004’s Chasing Liberty, featuring Diaries costar Moore. Goodall also wrote the screenplay for the 2020 thriller The Bay of Silence and had a small role in the 2021 action comedy Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. Héctor Elizondo as Joe

If you’re a fan of Grey’s Anatomy, you’ll recognize Héctor Elizondo as the father of Callie Torres (Sara Ramírez). However, Elizondo has been acting professionally since the early 1960s and was an Emmy Award-winning actor before starring in The Princess Diaries and its sequel.
Since then, Elizondo has appeared on Miracles, Century City, Cane, Monk and B Positive and had a recurring role on Last Man Standing. He also provided the voice of Commissioner Gordon in The Lego Batman Movie (2017). But he’ll always be remembered as Joe in our hearts, the head of Genovian security infatuated with the queen.
In real life, Elizondo has been married to Carolee Campbell since 1969, and he has one son, Rodd, from a previous relationship.
