An entrepreneur and bestselling author, Martha Stewart, born Martha Kostyra, 1941 in New Jersey. Stewart grew up in New Jersey, in a working-class family.
She worked as a model when she was 13, appearing in fashion shows as well as television and print advertisements.

Stewart earned a degree in European and architectural history in 1962, at that time, she met Andy Stewart, and the two got married. Stewart worked as a stockbroker for the boutique firm of Monness, Williams, and Sidel. Then she worked on Wall Street until 1972, when the family decided to move to Connecticut.
After moving, Stewart started a catering business, which she ran from the basement of her house in Connecticut. In only ten years, her basement business had become a $1-million project.
Through this project, she earned valuable contacts while catering for business owners, publishers, and celebrity clients. Her cooking talents and hard work expanded with her first book, Entertaining, which became a bestseller. More books followed, Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus, Martha Stewart’s Hors d’Oeuvres,
In addition to her success in publishing, Stewart worked as an editor for the magazine House Beautiful and later as a contributing editor to Family Circle. While her career was rapidly growing, her family life changed, and in 1989, after separating from her husband for three years, her marriage ended in divorce in 1990.
In that same year, Stewart published her own magazine, Martha Stewart Living, which was another immediate success for her.
Her business grew even more to include two magazines, a checkout-size recipe publication, a cable television show, a syndicated newspaper column, a series of how-to books, a radio show, an Internet site, and $763 million in annual retail sales.
Martha’s Living Omnimedia was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with her as chairman and CEO, and she became a billionaire.

In 2001, Stewart ordered the sale of 4,000 shares of ImClone Systems, a biomedical firm owned by family friend Samuel Waksal.
The sale of her shares caused the stock price to drop, and people suspected acts of insider trading. Stewart was under investigation for selling hundreds of shares of ImClone Systems just before the Food and Drug Administration’s refusal to approve the company’s new cancer drug.
Due to the investigation, Stewart stepped down as chairman and CEO in 2003, as she focused on defending herself against charges of lying and obstructing justice. After being convicted in 2004, she retained only an editorial role with the company.
After her release from prison, NBC announced she would host two new shows, a daytime talk and how-to show, and part of the reality show The Apprentice produced by Mark Burnett and Donald Trump.
In 2024, Stewart’s life and career were made into the Netflix documentary Martha. Stewart remains active in 2026 with business, lifestyle content, and media projects.
